Tears Help Us Heal

To the person who was taught that tears are a sign of weakness… There are many nights you can remember crying yourself to sleep. You eventually learned to cry alone because when there were people around, they made you feel silly for expressing yourself. Now, crying alone is the norm for you. You think, “No one can see me this way.”

When you cried, you were usually told to to “suck it up,” “stop being weak.” Tears were not allowed. Emotions were unacceptable. Be strong, always, was the expectation. These rules became so engrained in your mind that now, you are so filled with unexpressed pain that it consumes you.

You don’t allow yourself to cry. And if you do, other people can never see your tears. When you are overwhelmed, you refuse to admit it because again, you were taught that admitting that you are tired is a sign of weakness. You internalize your emotions now because they were always met with rejection in the past. You Keep it in & pretend that everything is okay.

Crying does not mean you are weak, tears are a sign that the emotions in your soul have overflowed and need to be released. Because the truth is, when that pain stays inside, it starts to rot & it will affect your mind, body, and soul.

Your feelings matter. Your pain, matters. Your experiences deserves a space to be heard. Yes there may be others who “have it worse” but your experiences matter too, because they are yours. And you are worth being listened to.
